If your neck is painful, you may have difficulty moving it. It is often more difficult to move your head to one side than the other. Many people describe this painful reduction in movement as having a stiff neck.
Neck pain may be caused by any of the structures in the neck. These structures include muscles, nerves, bones (vertebrae) and the discs between the vertebrae. Neck pain can originate come from structures near the neck, such as the shoulder, jaw, head, and upper arm.
Physiotherapy is a very effective way to treat a stiff neck.
A stiff neck is commonly caused by muscular strain or muscular spasm. The cause of this is often postural, sleeping in an awkward position, or performing a sudden movement of the head.
If you have a stiff neck you should keep it moving as much as possible. If your pain is severe it may be worthwhile arranging to see your doctor or practice nurse for some painkillers and / or anti-inflammatory medication (if appropriate).
If you have a stiff neck you should avoid prolonged postures (such as sitting at a computer, driving for long periods etc.) and other activities that aggravate your pain.
Physiotherapy can significantly accelerate your recovery from a stiff neck. Your physiotherapist will diagnose your problem, advise which structures are causing it and determine the severity of your injury. This will enable your physiotherapist to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
